5-1: Master piece
Espanyol, thanks to an excellent football display, clearly defeated Rayo in a sunny morning

Cornellà-El Prat was the perfect scenario for one of the most incredible football displays in recent years. Our team did a fine performance, probably the best in the season. Mauricio Pochettino’s team, hurt in their own pride after defeat suffered a week ago against the leader, fortunately recovered his traditional spirit to get an absolutely deserved victory against a rival who was enjoying a very good spell, but that was unable to stop the brilliant performance of our team. It was the end to a very difficult week for Espanyol, players, Club and fans, but once more our players reacted on time to go back to the elite positions in the classification. It was a breathtaking display hard to describe after such a great and marvelous performance.

The pericos started the match fully involved as the team did not want any more upsets, neither unpleasant surprises. Thus, in less than ten minutes our players were 2-0 on the lead, two vital goals to put the match on track for us. Firstly it was Uche who with a header after a cross ball by Javi López, sent the ball to the net, and shortly afterwards, after a nice pass by Sergio García, Coutinho scored his first goal as Espanyol player. The two winter reinforcements showed why they were hired.

Rayo, who is doing rather well this season, looked for the goal especially through a highly motivated Raul Tamudo our former striker for many years. In fact he enjoyed, in the first half, three clear chances which he missed. Sandoval’s men carried on and threatened our goal a couple or three of times.

Both Espanyol and their fans were enjoying a great deal, even more after Coutinho paid tribute to Dani Jarque by scoring his second goal in the 21st minute thanks to a magic move typical from Brazilian talented players like him who dribbled all their rivals, reached Joel’s goal and by means of a subtle touch sent the ball into the net. It was an incredible goal scored in a very moving minute for all Espanyol as a whole. The first goal scored in the 21st minute at Cornellà-El Prat was a fine master piece which no doubt our eternal captain fully deserved. On top of that, our players, far from relaxation, carried on pressing Rayo who in turn could not at all cope since the degree of intensity together with the thrill of Espanyol, were too much of a threat for Rayo players. Our football display was brilliant and just to finish the first half Uche scored our fourth goal in the sunny football morning.

The score was pretty ample and it obviously invited to certain dose of relaxation. Nevertheless Espanyol kept at it, playing according to their system and only looking in front of them how to arrive to our rivals’ goal. In spite of the three substitutes introduced by the visitors’ manager Sandoval at half time, the script of the match did not at all change. Joel, despite the goals, was the best visitor player as he performed fine saves which prevented Espanyol from scoring further goals. It clearly seemed that the fifth goal was just about to arrive, but unfortunately it was Tamudo, our former captain, who scored for Rayo Vallecano. For a few seconds, it was Tamudo the protagonist as he is the only player who has scored in the three official Espanyol grounds, thus: Sarrià, Montjuic and Cornellà-El Prat.

However Espanyol, did not want to concede anymore and decided to go further. Romaric enjoyed an incredibly good opportunity in his first action but he missed when he had everything for him to score. Uche was more accurate after he scored his third goal thanks to a cross ball by Sergio García, thus getting his first hat-trick in our team, something which not many players achieve in their careers. Till the final whistle, it was a fine display from our team who deserved a further goal specially when ref Texeira Vitienes did not concede a clear pushing off on Sergio García inside the visitors’ box. Fortunately we did not need such penalty due to the great difference in the score.

It was a most magic morning at the Cornellà-El Prat ground. Funny enough, after five consecutive matches without a victory, it was the first time that our team scored five goals in our new Stadium. It was an absolutely deserved victory which cannot be at all questioned.
